NRHJN Applauds UNILAG’S Appointment of Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi As Director, SAFEGUARDING CENTRE

The Network of Reproductive Health Journalists of Nigeria, NRHJN, has applauded and celebrated the appointment of its Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, as the pioneer Acting Director of the Safeguarding Centre at the University of Lagos.

In a release signed by the National President and Secretary of the network, Mrs Yinka Shokunbi and Hajia Sekinah Temitope Lawal respectively, it was stated that Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi brings a wealth of experience to this role, as a senior lecturer at the  Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, an Attorney and the Executive Founder/Director of the Women Advocacy Research and Development Centre, WARDC.

“She is also a Co-convener of the Feminist Womanifesto with dedicated years of experience to international gender advocacy. In addition, she serves as a Board representative on multiple reproductive health rights organizations, including the NRHJN.

As a longstanding Board of Trustees member of the NRHJN, Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi has been a great pillar of support in fostering a network of resilient media advocates and partners across Nigeria.

“We commend the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, and the entire management team for appointing Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi as  the inaugural Acting Director of the Safeguarding Centre. She is undoubtedly a strong and fitting choice for this position.”

Members of the NRHJN extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi on this well-deserved appointment. “We pray that God grants her the wisdom and  fortitude to excel in this role.” 

The UNILAG Safeguarding Centre is newly established to ensure a secure and supportive environment for the community within the higher institution of learning.  Its mission is to prevent harm and abuse, particularly for vulnerable individuals within the university community.

The centre is focused on developing and implementing policies, establishing strong safeguarding frameworks and fostering a culture of vigilance and accountability.

It reflects the university’s commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive spaces for all.             

As media advocates who closely work with Dr Akiyode-Afolabi, we trust that as a renowned gender advocate, she is suitably equipped to foster a safer and more inclusive environment for all members of the University of Lagos community.
