The Association of Resident Doctors, Lagos State Health Service Commission (ARD-LSHSC) successfully held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference recently at the LASEMS Hall, General Hospital, Lagos, Odan.
The AGM and Scientific Conference commenced on 22nd December 2025, bringing together resident doctors under the Health Service Commission (HSC) and across Lagos State for academic engagement, leadership development, and strategic discussions on the evolving role of doctors beyond clinical practice.
Speaking on the theme; “Building Doctors for Leadership and Impact Beyond Clinical Practice,” Dr Adedamola Dada, immediate past Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, and current Chief Executive Officer of Redeemer’s Health Village, emphasized the need for medical doctors to also imbibe good leadership traits, good governance, and strategic influence in building resilient and effective healthcare systems.
In his paper on the sub-theme, “Demystifying the 2025 Tax Reforms: Compliance, Deductions, and Benefits for Medical Professionals,” Mr Niyi Fowobaje, a financial expert, gave practical insights into financial literacy, statutory obligations, deductions, and implications of emerging tax reforms for medical practitioners.
A major highlight of the scientific programme was a panel discussion titled: “Beyond Clinical Excellence: Building Doctors for Leadership and Strategic Influence.”
The session was anchored by Dr Ricketts-Odebode, with a distinguished panel comprising: Dr Ime Okon – 25th MWAN President and MD/CEO, General Hospital Ibeju-Lekki, Dr Ahmad Sa’eid – Consultant General Surgeon and Head of Surgery, General Hospital Lagos, Dr Jimi Sodipo – Consultant, Family Physician.
The panel explored leadership pathways, mentorship, health system governance, and the expanding role of doctors in policy formulation and strategic decision-making beyond bedside care.
Following the panel discussion, the scientific POCUS session was presented by Dr Yewande Ijose, Consultant Radiologist and Director of Training, Radiology Department, under the topic: “Optimizing Patient Care Through Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS): Integration, Benefits, and Challenges,” highlighting real-time diagnostics, improved patient outcomes, and practical challenges of integrating POCUS into routine clinical practice.
In addition, the conference featured a hands-on Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training session at the Department of Radiology, alongside a free medical screening exercise, reinforcing ARD-LSHSC’s commitment to professional development and community health impact.
Another key highlight was the launch of the maiden edition of ARD-LSHSC’s official newsletter, Trailblazer. The publication captures the association’s voice, reflection, and statement of intent, showcasing thought-provoking articles, academic highlights, professional insights, and stories reflecting the resilience, creativity, andvision of ARD-LSHSC members, with aspirations toward establishing an ARD-LSHSC journal.
Also, a historic milestone happened with the election of the first female President of ARD-LSHSC, in person of Dr Azeezat Oyewande , followed by the swearing-in of the newly elected Executive Committee for the 2025/2026 tenure, known as The Paragon Exco, symbolizing continuity, inclusion, and renewed commitment to purposeful leadership.
